Students will also have the opportunity to volunteer in one of many clinics that offer all types of medical specialties. Medical students that are currently studying or in their resident period, or those in the medical field that are already practicing and want to exchange their knowledge and experiences with doctors in Ecuador will also find this program educational. STD and Sex Education Program

SVE’s newest internship program offers a unique experience of healthcare and educational training. We work with a local NGO whose mission is:

“to give information and direction to adolescents, university students (men and women between 12 and 28 years) and high class, middle class and poor communities to prevent unwanted pregnancies, as well as the spread of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD’s) and HIV/AIDS. They work to provide information about and access to sexual and reproductive health care and contraceptive methods, to educate about abstinence and to teach the importance of postponing the early initiation of sexual activity.”

Program Description

This program will help SVE participants to learn about the unique methods that are used to educate adolescents, teens, and communities of Ecuador about the importance of sexual and reproductive health. Each participant will not only see first-hand the successes of the program, but will also be able to work with the organization to promote sexual and reproductive health education through lectures, workshops, conferences and health fairs. Participants will actively work with the professionals to provide information, and will be given the opportunity to create their own program with expert support. Students will be engaged and involved in the lectures. This close involvement with the people of Ecuador will expose the SVE participant to the culture, common issues and problems facing communities and youth, and provide a unique one on one interaction. Participants will be involved in the following activities.
  • Provide practical training and information about sexual and reproductive healthcare in Ecuador
  • Provide workshops in different schools and universities in Qutio
  • Create and environment of discussion and conversation regarding sexual health topics
  • Collaborate in the development of information and materials to be taught

Spanish Classes

Participants in all of our programs will receive 40 hours of Spanish classes throughout the month. The first week will contain 20 hours and will be divided as follows: 4 hours daily, divided into 2 sessions per day, five days per week. The classes will be in groups of 2 or more students. Students will be required to take a placement exam in order to determine their Spanish ability. Each group will be made up of students with relatively the same level.

Homestay

Participating families are chosen for their friendliness and helpfulness. They all have experience with hosting foreign students, and live in a very safe residential neighbourhood in the North of Quito. Living with an Ecuadorian family helps the students learn about the culture, customs, and food of the country, while at the same giving them the opportunity to practice their Spanish. Each student will have their own private room, shared bathroom, 2 meals per day (breakfast and dinner Monday to Saturday), and laundry service once a week. Students will be with the same family for the duration of the program. All the families usually have two or more students in the house. Generally students share the same interests and enjoy having someone to travel with, not only to different areas around Ecuador, but while in Quito as well.
